How to Fight for Fair Maps
What is the Fight for Fair Maps?
The fight for fair maps is an attempt to combat the manipulation of Electoral Districts for the benefit of one Political Party. This manipulation is often referred to as Gerrymandering.
Why is this Important?
The fight for fair maps is important because members of the United States government are currently using their power to suppress voters for their own personal gain. Every person has the right to a voice, and it's time our government listens.
More on Gerrymandering
Gerrymandering occurs during the process of redistricting. In Texas, members of our State Legislature gather every 10 years to redraw our state's districts. During this process the districts can be drawn in ways that give a large advantage to one political party. These acts of defining districts for the benefit of one party go against the United States Constitution, yet they still occur all over our country.

These are just a few areas around the country, one of which is here in Houston, that are victims of unfair districting. These maps are not shapen naturally or in a way that allows for every voter's voice to be heard. Instead they have been manicured to assure that no matter who votes, the people in power are really choosing who wins.
What can you do?
Educate Yourself
Before we can work towards finding a solution to this problem, first, you have to know what the problem is, why it exists, and who is fighting it.
Join Movements
This may sound difficult, but right now there are multiple groups in Houston working to fight this issue by holding protests, contacting representatives, and creating petitions.
Inform Others
When people hear about this issue we are hoping that they will decide on their own to spread awareness about how it affects so many people
Vote!
The best way to fight this issue is to vote for State Representatives that care about it. In Texas, your state representative and senator draw the maps. Those "down ballot" races are important!
